Asset builds that finish
before you've switched tabs -
instant HMR, not a coffee break.
I build and migrate WordPress theme pipelines to Vite - mainly on Sage 10/Acorn - for near-instant hot module reload and production builds that don't feel like waiting on a legacy Webpack setup.

Build time - Vite vs. the alternatives
Approximate, project-dependent - the gap widens as a theme's JS/CSS grows, which is exactly when Webpack rebuilds start to hurt.
Build tooling most developers never think to fix
A slow dev server doesn't show up in PageSpeed, but it burns hours of every development day.
Native ESM in development
Vite serves your source files directly over native ES modules during development - no bundling step at all until you build for production. That's why the dev server starts in under a second.
Hot Module Reload that actually stays fast
Change a Blade component or a CSS file and see it reflected in the browser almost instantly - no full page reload, no losing your scroll position or form state.
Smaller, smarter production bundles
Vite uses Rollup for production builds, with automatic code-splitting and tree-shaking that's genuinely competitive with a hand-tuned Webpack config - without the hand-tuning.
Why teams finally migrate off Webpack
A dev server that takes 30+ seconds to start
Every "quick fix" costs a full rebuild cycle. Vite's dev server starts in under a second because it doesn't bundle anything until you actually load a module.
Laravel Mix configs nobody wants to touch
Mix is effectively unmaintained. I migrate the same Sage/Acorn theme to Vite's official Laravel/Roots plugin, keeping your existing Blade structure intact.
Legacy build configs held together with patches
Years of accumulated Webpack loaders, plugins, and workarounds nobody fully understands anymore. A Vite config is usually a fraction of the size and far easier to reason about.
Vite build-tooling services
From migrating an existing Sage/Laravel Mix theme to setting up a new Vite pipeline from scratch.
Laravel Mix β Vite Migration
Move an existing Sage 10/Acorn theme onto Vite's official Roots plugin without breaking your Blade structure.
Vite Pipeline Setup
New theme builds configured with Vite from day one - Tailwind, Alpine.js, and image handling included.
Legacy Webpack Migration
Replace a hand-rolled Webpack config with a leaner, faster Vite equivalent.
Multi-entry Asset Setups
Editor styles, admin scripts, and front-end bundles configured as separate Vite entry points, correctly enqueued.
CI/CD Build Integration
Vite production builds wired into your deployment pipeline with proper cache-busted asset manifests.
Dev Environment Troubleshooting
HMR not connecting, HTTPS/proxy issues in local dev, or asset 404s in production - diagnosed and fixed.

Questions about Vite on WordPress
In development, Vite serves your source files directly over native ES modules instead of bundling everything up front - so the dev server starts in under a second regardless of project size. Webpack (and Laravel Mix, which wraps it) has to bundle before it can serve anything, which is why cold starts and rebuilds get slower as a theme grows.
Yes - this is one of the most common requests I get. Roots (the team behind Sage) now recommends Vite over Mix, and the official roots/acorn + vite integration lets me migrate most themes without touching your Blade views, just the build config and asset enqueuing.
Yes, via the @vitejs/plugin-legacy plugin, which generates a fallback bundle for browsers that don't support native ESM. Most WordPress client sites don't need it, but I add it when analytics show meaningful legacy-browser traffic.
HMR works the same in the block editor and front end - CSS and most JS changes update live without a full page reload, which matters most when iterating on ACF Blocks or Alpine.js components inside wp-admin.
No - while Sage 10/Acorn is my default stack and has the cleanest official Vite integration, I've set up Vite pipelines for classic PHP themes too, using the community vite-plugin-wordpress-asset or a custom enqueue helper.
Auditing the current Mix/Webpack config, replacing it with an equivalent Vite config, updating asset enqueue calls to read Vite's manifest file, and testing both dev-server HMR and a production build before handoff. Most migrations on an existing Sage theme take 1-3 days depending on complexity.
