What does a WordPress developer actually cost? The honest answer.

"How much does a WordPress developer cost?" has a genuinely frustrating answer: it depends entirely on where they're based, what level of quality you're hiring, and how the project is priced (hourly vs fixed). This guide gives you actual numbers rather than the usual vague "it depends" answer.

I'm Rajan Gupta - an India-based WordPress developer who has worked with clients in the UK, US, Canada, Singapore, and Switzerland since 2016. The numbers in this guide come from real market data: Upwork/Contra listings, conversations with developers in each market, and my own experience as both a developer and someone who regularly competes with developers in each country.

Why the cost gap between India and Western markets is so large

The hourly rate gap between an India-based developer ($25-60/hr) and a UK/US developer ($100-180/hr) is not primarily explained by a quality difference. It is explained almost entirely by three factors:

  • Purchasing power parity. $25/hr in India has equivalent purchasing power to roughly $80-100/hr in the UK or US. The actual standard of living supported by those rates is comparable.
  • Infrastructure costs. Office space, hardware, software, and tax in India cost a fraction of Western equivalents. A developer running a lean freelance operation in India has dramatically lower overheads.
  • 30 years of outsourcing industry development. India's IT services industry has been training developers for international clients since the 1990s. The senior tier has worked with Western clients for decades.

The quality gap is real at the low end ($5-15/hr). It is not real at the senior end ($30-60/hr). The developers charging those rates have English-language portfolios, international client reviews, and technical skills identical to their Western counterparts.

Country-by-country cost breakdown

India ($25-60/hr / $800-4,500 per project)

India has the widest quality distribution of any market. The $5/hr end of the market delivers page builder templates and disappears before the support period ends. The $30-60/hr end delivers custom theme development (Sage/Vite/Tailwind), 90+ PageSpeed scores, and long-term client relationships with Western businesses.

The key vetting questions for India-based developers: What stack do they use? Can they share PageSpeed scores on their last three builds? Do they provide a written scope document before work starts? The answers separate the senior developers from the junior ones immediately.

Best for: Fixed-price projects with clear specifications. Performance optimisation. Custom theme development. White-label work for Western agencies. Long-term retainer relationships where timezone async is an advantage.

How much does a WordPress website cost in India (โ‚น pricing)?

If you're a business based in India rather than hiring an India-based developer for a Western market, the numbers above convert roughly to: a simple landing page from โ‚น15,000, a professional custom WordPress website between โ‚น25,000 and โ‚น80,000 depending on complexity, and a WooCommerce store with payment integration from โ‚น40,000. Fixed-price quotes after a free 15-minute call are standard practice - avoid open-ended hourly billing for a defined-scope website.

UK ($100-180/hr / $7,000-18,000 per project)

UK developer rates vary significantly by location. London freelancers charge ยฃ80-150/hr; agencies in London charge ยฃ120-250/hr. Outside London - Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh - rates are 20-40% lower.

UK developers offer the advantage of real-time collaboration in the same timezone, face-to-face meetings where relevant, and implicit familiarity with UK market conventions (GDPR compliance, UK VAT logic in WooCommerce, UK payment gateways like GoCardless and Stripe UK). For complex projects where in-person collaboration is genuinely necessary, the premium is often justified.

Best for: Projects requiring frequent in-person collaboration, UK-specific regulatory requirements, or clients who simply prefer domestic suppliers regardless of cost.

USA ($100-175/hr / $8,000-20,000 per project)

US rates are the highest globally on average, driven by the high cost of living in major tech hubs. New York and San Francisco freelancers commonly charge $125-175/hr. Mid-market US cities - Austin, Denver, Atlanta - are closer to $80-130/hr.

US developers offer the same timezone advantages as UK for US clients. Many US-based "agencies" actually source their development from India or Eastern Europe anyway - at a significant markup. A US agency might charge $150/hr for work that a senior India-based developer delivers directly for $35-60/hr.

If you're in the US: Detailed US market guide - includes W-8BEN tax compliance, USD pricing, and EST/PST timezone framing.

Canada ($80-150/hr / $6,000-15,000 per project)

Canada's developer market closely mirrors the US in structure, with Toronto and Vancouver commanding the highest rates. The demand for bilingual EN/FR WordPress builds - particularly for federally regulated industries and Quebec-market businesses - creates a specific niche that not all developers serve.

Canadian businesses in the CAD $6,000-15,000 project range are often the best candidates for India-based development: the budget is meaningful, the projects have clear specifications, and the overnight async delivery model works perfectly with EST/PST timezones.

Singapore ($80-150/hr / $6,000-14,000 per project)

Singapore has one of Asia's highest developer rate markets, driven by the city-state's position as a regional tech hub. Strong demand for multilingual EN/ZH WordPress builds, APAC-focused SEO setups, and WooCommerce stores with regional payment gateway integrations (PayNow, GrabPay, NETS).

The IST/SGT overlap is the best in the world for India-based developers - only 2.5 hours. Same-day real-time collaboration is genuinely possible, making Singapore one of the most natural markets for India-based development partnerships.

If you're in Singapore: Detailed Singapore market guide.

Switzerland ($130-220/hr / $9,000-22,000 per project)

Switzerland has the highest developer rates in Europe, driven by the country's extremely high cost of living. Zurich and Geneva agency rates are CHF 150-300/hr. A standard custom WordPress build costs CHF 8,000-20,000 at a Swiss digital agency.

The CHF/USD rate advantage for Swiss businesses hiring India-based developers is exceptional - equivalent to roughly 70% savings versus local agency rates. I offer CHF invoicing for Swiss clients, TWINT/PostFinance WooCommerce integration, and multilingual DE/FR/IT builds as standard.

Fixed-price vs hourly: which is better?

For most WordPress projects, fixed-price is almost always better for the client. Here's why:

  • Predictable budget. You know the exact cost before any work begins.
  • No incentive for padding. Hourly billing incentivises slow work. Fixed-price incentivises efficient delivery.
  • Scope discipline. Fixed-price requires a written scope document - which forces clarity on both sides before money changes hands.
  • Easier to compare quotes. "ยฃ8,000 for a custom WordPress site" is directly comparable across developers. "ยฃ100/hr" is not - because you don't know how many hours.

The only case where hourly makes sense is genuinely exploratory work where the scope cannot be defined upfront - a complex integration, an R&D project, or ongoing maintenance where the volume is variable. For those cases, I use a monthly retainer model with a defined hours cap rather than open-ended hourly billing.

Total cost of ownership: hidden costs to factor in

The hourly rate or project price is not the full cost. When comparing developer options across markets, factor in:

  • Revision rounds. How many are included? Cheap developers often quote a low price and charge for every revision. My projects include clearly defined revision rounds in the scope document.
  • Post-launch support. Is there a warranty period? I include 30-day post-launch support on all project builds.
  • Communication overhead. A developer who takes 3 days to reply to every question costs time even if they cost less money. I reply within one business day, usually much faster.
  • Handover quality. Does the project come with documentation? Is the codebase clean enough for another developer to work on? Cheap builds often require a full rebuild within 2 years.
  • Currency and transfer fees. USD payments to Indian developers sometimes incur bank transfer fees. I accept Stripe, Wise, and PayPal to minimise this.

The bottom line

WordPress developer costs in 2026 range from $5/hr (Fiverr junior) to $220/hr (Swiss agency partner). The quality range is just as wide. The sweet spot for most international businesses hiring for quality and value is a senior India-based developer at $30-60/hr equivalent - with a written scope, fixed price, and a portfolio of live, fast, client-approved work.
